Peptide Storage 101: How to Protect Sample Integrity

Poor storage is one of the most common ways peptide integrity is compromised after a sample has already been correctly reconstituted. This article covers the basics of storing both lyophilised and reconstituted peptides.

Lyophilised (unmixed) peptides

  • Store frozen, protected from light, until ready for use
  • Keep the vial sealed until the day you plan to reconstitute it
  • Avoid repeated temperature fluctuations — don't move a vial in and out of the freezer unnecessarily

Reconstituted peptides

  • Generally store refrigerated, not frozen, once mixed with bacteriostatic water
  • Use within the timeframe appropriate to that specific peptide, as stability varies
  • Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles, which can degrade peptide structure
  • Label every reconstituted vial with the date of preparation and concentration, for traceability

Why this matters for research consistency

A peptide that has degraded due to poor storage will not behave the same way in a research context as a freshly reconstituted one, even if the same nominal dose is used. Consistent storage practice is part of getting consistent, comparable results across a research protocol.
