What is HPLC?
High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) is an analytical technique used to separate, identify, and quantify the individual compounds within a mixture. In the context of peptides, it's used to determine two things: identity (is this actually the peptide it claims to be?) and purity (how much of the sample is the target peptide, versus impurities, degradation products, or synthesis byproducts?).
Why purity percentage matters
A peptide sample is rarely 100% pure. During synthesis, small amounts of truncated sequences, deletion products, or other byproducts can be present. A high HPLC purity percentage (such as 99%+) means the sample is overwhelmingly the intended peptide, with minimal contamination from these byproducts. Lower purity introduces more variables into any downstream research, since it becomes harder to isolate the effects of the target compound from those of the impurities.
How to read a purity claim
Not all purity claims are equal. Some things worth checking with any supplier:
- Is the purity figure batch-specific, or a general marketing claim?
- Was the testing done in-house or by an independent third party?
- Is the testing method disclosed (HPLC is the standard for peptides)?
